HSCI 390 + L
Classes and programs:
The Health Sciences 390 (BIOSTATISTICS) and 390L (BIOSTATISTICS LAB) are core classes for more than one degree program. Your degree program will determine听which section of HSCI 390/L听you should enroll in. For example, there are听sections听reserved听only听for public health students and听sections听reserved for听only听health administration students. This is because the lab curriculum differs for the two programs. If you are a student who is not in public health or health administration,听you may need to contact听your program director for a听permission number.
Linked Sections:
Each Health Sciences 390 lecture is听linked听to a specific 390L Lab. These are听linked classes,听meaning that if you take the section 鈥1鈥 lecture you need to take the听linked听section 鈥1鈥 lab. Students are not allowed to mix and match lecture and lab sections.听
The only exception to this听is if听a student听has听passed one class but needs听to retake the other. If this is the case, please contact your advisor, the department, or the instructor directly.听
Enrollment
Class听sections听are open for enrollment until听filled, unless otherwise specified. The online听sections听fill quickly. The department does not听open additional online听sections听until all other sections听have been filled. If the online听sections听are full,听but the in-person听sections听are open, students should enroll in the in-person听sections or risk waiting until next semester to register.听It is not recommended for students to 鈥渨ait and see鈥 if a听鈥渃losed鈥澨齩nline听section听will eventually have an听open seat. This could result in a student not having a spot in any 390听section and a possible delay in graduation.听
Only instructors of the classes have full access to permission numbers so please contact the instructors about class adds. We recommend the following:
- Enroll in an open class.
- If all classes are full contact the instructors of the Lecture and the Linked Lab via email. 鈥 (this does not guarantee a spot)
- Sign up on the waitlist. 鈥 (this does not guarantee a spot)
- Just before the start of the semester the waitlist will be sent to all instructors, and they can cross check when you signed up and if you are a graduating senior and fill any open spots from the waitlist and based on who contacted them.
Waitlists
Due to听the听linked听nature of听HSCI 390 + 390L, the SOLAR waitlist system does not听allow a waitlist. Instead, we have an internal听survey link听as a waitlist for听HSCI 390/L.听Please only听sign up to be on the waitlist听once听your听enrollment date has opened.听Fill out the survey听ONE听time per semester.
The waitlist听survey听opens at the start of听each听Fall听and Spring semester听enrollment听period.听
听
(if the survey does not work, this is because the survey closes on Aug 1st for Fall & Jan 1st for Spring.)
When active, the waitlist听survey听is checked at least once a month, and emails sent to the email address provided in the survey. After the waitlist听survey听closes,听any open seats听are filled based on the following priority:听
- Students in听the program听the class is听reserved听for
- Graduating听seniors with a grad听date听of that semester
- Those who only have HSCI 390/L as听one of the last听major听classes听
After the waitlist听survey听closes,听students听need to contact the听HSCI 390/L听instructors directly about classes.听However, if seats become available in a closed听section,听instructors听admit听students听off the waitlist. Once the semester starts,听the waitlist听survey听is deleted and there are no more enrollments听off the waitlist.听

FAQ
It is not recommended for you to sign up for the waitlist if there are still in-person听section听seats available. Online听sections听typically fill quickly and seats rarely open prior to the start of the semester. If you have time, you can wait for another semester and try to enroll in an online听section, or you听can听take one of the open seats available in an in-person听section.
The department is limited in the number of online听sections听offered. Once the class registration opens,听there usually are no more听sections听added and students should enroll in available seats in other听sections.
We do prioritize graduating seniors and try to accommodate as best as we can. Contact your program director or advisor and explain the situation. You will need to have your DPR ready and proof that you are听graduating this semester.
No. The waitlists are cleared out at the beginning of each semester and every semester is considered its own enrolment period with a waitlist.
