Nazarian College Student Teams Win National Recognition in Business Competitions
Students from the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics continue to excel on the national stage. Both undergraduate and graduate student teams recently earned top placements in prestigious business competitions, highlighting their talent, hard work and the strength of our academic programs.
Undergraduate Teams Achieve Top Awards at IBECC and SBI Competitions
At the 2025 International Business Ethics Case Competition in San Francisco, the Nazarian College team of Erin Jordan, Chris Mendoza, Faith Sanchez, Melia Mikha, Cameron Gonzalez, Taj Owens and Illia Gryshyn brought home multiple awards.
The team earned:
鈥⑻ 听 听First place in both the 25-minute and 90-second presentation categories
鈥⑻ 听 听Second place in the 10-minute category within their respective divisions
Undergraduate Students Also Delivered an Outstanding Performance at the Small Business Institute鈥檚 Annual Conference:
Team Epicenter Arts + Entertainment 鈥 Lily Chakrian, Alyssa Ortiz, Nathaniel Der and Jordan Reyes-Tellez earned first place in the Undergraduate Consulting category
Team Hot Rod Cameras 鈥 Jack Welty, Irina Sharmanova, Allen Marin and Jackeline Cruz-Estrada earned second place in the Undergraduate Comprehensive category
These results continue the strong legacy of the Nazarian College Small Business Consulting Program, which has finished first in the Undergraduate Consulting category in four of the last five years.
MBA Students Earn National Recognition in SBI Consulting Competition
Each year, the Nazarian College MBA Program participates in the Small Business Institute鈥檚 Project of the Year Competition. A Spring 2024 consulting project by MBA students Alvin Rodriguez, Brandon Stone, Fernando Lozano, Leo Orellana and Sonia Rosales for their client, Orleatha Smith, co-owner of Sip Herbals, was nominated for this prestigious competition. The project earned third place in the Graduate Consulting/Specialized category across North America.
Additionally, a Spring 2024 project completed by MBA students Joseph Galarneau, Alexandra Gamero, Daniel Gushue, Anthony Mejia and Luis Perez for their client, CEO and President Vic Chouchanian of San Fernando Brewing Company, earned third place in the Graduate Consulting/Feasibility category, among programs across North America.

March Highlights
Nazarian College Leaders Share Strategies on Insurance, Economics
Last month, Nazarian College advisory board member Tim Gaspar, CEO of Gaspar Insurance Services Inc., took the stage at the Los Angeles Business Journal's Valley Economics Trends 2025 event at 快活林性息's Orchard Conference Center. He shared his insights on the complexities of insurance and rebuilding Los Angeles after recent devastating fires. Dr. Glen Whitman, chair of Economics at the Nazarian College, also took the stage to moderate a group of panelists. Their discussions provided insights into navigating insurance complexities, financial strategies and long-term business resilience in the Valley.
Giving Day Donors Raise $5K for Student Success

February Event Highlights
Last month, we saw an amazing turnout at our various events. More than 500 students participated in , a bi-annual event hosted by Nazarian College鈥檚 Career Education and Professional Development Center that connects students with potential employers. The event, held on Feb. 12 at 快活林性息鈥檚 USU Northridge Center, featured over 40 employers and nearly 100 industry representatives from companies such as Bank of Hope, Enterprise Mobility, PepsiCo 鈥 Frito-Lay, and Universal Studios Hollywood. Students engaged with professionals, explored career opportunities, and gained valuable insights into various industries.
In addition to Industry Night, our bi-annual Meet the Firms event provided another key networking opportunity for students pursuing careers in accounting and finance. The event, held on Feb. 18 at the Odyssey in Granada Hills, connected students with over 50 top firms and recruiters, offering a platform to discuss potential career paths and internship opportunities. Students gained firsthand exposure to industry expectations and had the chance to make valuable professional connections.
Student Spotlight: Microsoft Office Specialist Competition Achievements
Three Nazarian College students鈥擡sha Bogal, Jennifer Martinez and Phillip Salem鈥攔ecently placed in the Top 10 at the 2025 Fall Qualifier for the , finishing in sixth, seventh and eighth place. Under the mentorship of Accountancy Lecturer David Primes, these students demonstrated their expertise in Microsoft Office applications while competing against students from across California.
Primes highlighted how the Excel certification exam, taken as part of the ACCT412L course, provides an opportunity to participate in the competition and prepares students for professional success. The Microsoft Office Specialist certification is an industry-recognized credential that enhances students鈥 resumes and validates their skills, helping them stand out in both academic and career pursuits. Dear Nazarian College Students,
As we reach the midpoint of the semester, I want to take a moment to commend you for the hard work and dedication you鈥檝e shown so far. The first two months have been filled with opportunities for growth, learning and connection. I hope you are finding your experience at Nazarian College both enriching and rewarding.
I鈥檓 pleased to share that our recent events, including the Nazarian College Fair, Meet the Firms and Industry Night, were each a tremendous success. The Nazarian College Fair featured a variety of campus听, providing students with valuable connections and information to support their academic and professional journeys. Hundreds of students stopped by to talk with faculty, learn more about our clubs and enjoy a slice (or two) of pizza. It was great seeing so many of you at the event! Meet the Firms鈥搊ur annual event for students and alumni in accounting, finance and information systems鈥揵rought together over 65 employers with more than 500 students for an evening of networking and conversations about career opportunities.听 And Industry Night, which is our in-person career fair hosted by CEPD,听saw a record-breaking turnout with 1,100 students in attendance鈥搕he highest we鈥檝e ever had!听听It was wonderful to see many of you actively engaging with your peers, faculty, and employers. Events like these provide valuable networking opportunities and strengthen our college community.
We also have several exciting events coming up designed to help you connect with your peers and further your professional growth.
- Oct. 23-24 鈥 Professor for a Day:听Every October, we bring our seasoned professionals back to the classrooms they once sat in to share industry insight, advice in choosing a career and getting a job, and the stories of their own journeys. This year, the speakers include听,听,听听and many more.
- Oct. 27 鈥 Fast Pitch New Venture Competition:听快活林性息 Fast Pitch is an 鈥渆levator pitch鈥 competition that will be held virtually where five teams of 快活林性息 students, selected as finalists from a competitive field, have three minutes and three slides to pitch their new venture idea to a panel of judges and audience. Fast Pitch is a great way to prepare you and your team for the Jeff Marine Bull Ring Competition in the upcoming Spring semester. This听听is open to all current 快活林性息 students and applications must be submitted by Oct. 27.
- Nov. 1 鈥 Bitcoin & Renewable Energy:听UCLA鈥檚 Bitcoin Bruins and 快活林性息鈥檚 Blockchain@快活林性息 presents an interactive Zoom panel with leading entrepreneurs and executives in the bitcoin space where you鈥檒l gain valuable insights into the future of energy finance, and the intersection of Bitcoin and sustainability.听听now.

Dear Nazarian College Students:
As we are now at the end of another enriching semester, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we've shared and extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you. To our graduating seniors, this time marks a significant milestone in your academic journey, and I am excited about the many possibilities in front of you.
Since my last newsletter in April, I have witnessed with great pleasure the active engagement of many of you in various activities, including numerous competitions.
While there are a lot more that you do, below are a few highlights from the past few weeks:
- LS Trust Marketing led by finance student Laci Sanchez,won the grand prize at the听.
- Nearly 30 real estate students recently toured one of Los Angeles' most iconic sports and entertainment venues鈥听to learn more about commercial real estate. You can expect more of these hands-on experiences following the generous gift from Harriet and Harvey Bookstein to our real estate center鈥now called the Bookstein Real Estate Center.
- Two undergraduate student teams from the听Business Honors Program Capstone听course secured first place at the prestigious 48th听Small Business Institute Annual Conference.
- In the comprehensive category, team members听Kahleho Molapisi, Justin Tolchinsky, Keiana Samoy, Justin Keller听and听Marisol Zuniga听won first place for Project of the Year.
- In the consulting category, team members听Emily Emrani, Fernanda Reyes, Brenda Dzul, Keenon Takaki听and听Patrik Khan-Babaei听won first place for Project of the Year.
- Two graduate student teams from the听听entered consulting projects in the 48thSmall Business Institute Annual Conference.
- In the graduate consulting/specialized category, team members听Ian Martin-Arujo, Katrin Babayan, Jake Dougherty听and听Fatoumata Goita听won first place for Project of the Year.
- In the graduate feasibility study/comprehensive category, team members听Edgar Banuelos, Bhavani Prasad, Taline Sarkisian, Chantal Sood听and听Diane Tran听won second place for Project of the Year.
- Five students received scholarships from听California鈥檚 Real Estate and Land Use Institute听this semester (23% of all awards throughout the CSU system). Congrats to听Briana Rubio, Lakshdeep Sukhija, Vy L. Tran, Trisha Williams听and听Abdulrahman Fayssal.
- Emily Emrani, Business Law, was a finalist for the 2024 Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.
- Fifteen undergraduate students attended the听听breakfast event at the Sheraton Universal Hotel.
- Twenty-five students completed the Roadmap to Exporting program, presented by the听, and received a certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce, a one-unit credit from 快活林性息 and great showcase in their resume. 听
- 听inaugurated its 50th听chapter.听Dr. Joanne Scillitoe听and Nazarian C-STE Staff member听Anna Manzo听were inducted as faculty advisor and secretary along with four student members:听Talin Aivazian, Elizabeth Hernandez, Payton Moreno听and听Sankalp Pala.
- The听听served 9,722 taxpayers at 15 locations this year.
- An impressive 282 students volunteered more than 31,000 hours at the clinic, under the supervision of expert 快活林性息 Nazarian faculty.
- These students helped local taxpayers claim more than $10.9 million in federal and state tax refunds and more than $3.6 million in federal and state-earned income tax credits while saving the taxpayers more than $2 million in preparation fees.
- Christopher Mendoza,听Joseph Coulombe,听Gillian Watkins,听Dominic Garcia听and听Eric Quinn, competed at the听听at the University of Massachusetts, Mount Ida campus in Newton, Massachusetts. They won second place in three different categories.
I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your specific achievements and the valuable lessons you've learned along the way as you prepare to embark on summer break and, for many of you, the next chapter of your lives. Whether you're entering the workforce, pursuing further education, or exploring new opportunities, remember that the skills and knowledge you've gained here will serve as a strong foundation for your future endeavors.
I want to express my deepest gratitude for your contributions to our college community. Your unique perspectives, talents, and passions have enriched our campus in countless ways, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of your journey.

Dear Nazarian College Students:
听Welcome back! I hope you had a great break and are energized and prepared to tackle the remainder听of听the semester head-on.
听As you dive back into your academic studies, I want to take a moment to emphasize the importance听of听not听only focusing听on听your studies but also prioritizing your well-being and engagement in campus activities.
While your studies are important, it鈥檚 also vital for you to set aside some time to relax and practice self-care between your study sessions. This can be as simple as taking a walk outside or connecting with friends and family.
听In line with this, I would like to congratulate those听of听you who actively participated in events earlier this year, including Industry Night, Meet the Firms and our Distinguished Speaker Series event featuring Sixth Street鈥檚 Marty Chavez.
Attending campus events fosters a sense听of听community and听offers diverse perspectives and experiences outside听ofthe classroom.听
I encourage every听one听of听you to continue this spirit听of听involvement this semester.听One such event that I'd like to highlight is our popular Bull Ring competition, which takes place from 3-5 p.m., April 24, at the University Student Union, Grand Salon.听听to support your peers and learn from the judges who will provide feedback to the five finalist student teams.
I also want to introduce you to a new program called 鈥淩oadmap to Exporting.鈥澨齏e live in LA, which has听one听of听the largest ports in the world together with the Long Beach Port. These two ports provide more than 40 percent听of听the total trade done by the U.S. in imports and exports.
If you are interested in the business听of听exporting goods or services, this is a program for you. Students who complete the program receive a certificate from the Department听of听Commerce and a 1-unit credit from 快活林性息 through Tseng College. Students can sign up for the program, which runs every Saturday in April, at this link:听.听I hope to see you there!

- ,听a new set of tech certificates as part of 鈥淐areer jumpstart鈥 鈥 a program funded by JPMorgan Chase Foundation. The bootcamps are led by tenure-track faculty members and will cover topics and skills that are in exceptionally high demand by employers in every discipline and every industry鈥攄ata analytics, python, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing and more. In addition, there are many more opportunities offered by individual departments and the financial aid and scholarship departments. If you apply for听one听of these听scholarships,听you may also be eligible for any of the other听scholarships听on the college list as well.听

Dear Nazarian College Students:
I hope you are enjoying your fall semester at Nazarian College! For those of you I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet, I am the听dean听of the college, and I am so pleased to welcome you to our campus.
It鈥檚 an exciting time to be at Nazarian College. You are an integral part of a diverse, dynamic community of hard-working students, nationally ranked faculty and dedicated staff. During my five years as听dean听of the college, we have expanded programs, like the BSBA and MS in Data Analytics in the Systems and Operations Management Department and added new projects鈥攊ncluding sought-after听听and听听available at no cost to students.
Initiatives such as these have captured the attention of many in the education field and our reputation as one of the best business colleges continues to grow.听The Wall Street Journal,听U.S. News & World Report,听Money Magazine听and听Diverse: Issues in Higher Education听consistently rank Nazarian College and 快活林性息 high on their list of top educational institutions鈥攆or our academic excellence as well as our societal contributions.
Beyond the classroom, we offer numerous events and programs that complement your academic curriculum to help you get ready for the world that awaits you outside of Nazarian College. This includes our popular Nazarian Fair, which introduces students to the college鈥檚 many resources, and Industry Night, a career fair and networking opportunity. On Oct. 12, Eric Chan, CFO of the LA Clippers, made a great presentation as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series (see听听article), and our Center for Social and Technology Entrepreneurship provided a couple of great Zoom events: 鈥淗ow to Find Your First Customers鈥 with Eric Rose, CEO of Pinnacle Product Innovation, and tomorrow鈥檚 鈥溾 with Ken Floyd of Artissimo Designs.
If you missed these events, don鈥檛 despair! We have many more opportunities scheduled from now through the end of the school year during which you can develop networking and leadership skills critical in today鈥檚 business world.
